Также при выборе сорта цветов нужно обратить внимание на высоту растений, есть цветы, достигающие высоты 30-45 см, а есть низкорослые разновидности, не вырастающие выше 20 см, при этом растения образуют пышные разветвлённые кустики и дают много соцветий на концах многочисленных побегов.
Низкорослые однолетние цветы можно использовать для создания ковровых клумб, а также для оформления бордюр вдоль дорожек. Компактные пышные кустики вербены с цветами не повредит ветер или дождь, эти цветы устойчивы к засухе, жаре. Вербена не требовательна к почве, цветёт всё лето пышно при минимальном уходе. Эти достоинства вербены привлекают цветоводов, но чтобы растения зацвели в начале лета, цветы выращивают через рассаду, проводя ранний посев в феврале или в начале марта.
Как посеять вербену:
Перед посевом цветов на рассаду готовят почву, смешивают в равных частях садовую землю, перегной, торф и песок. Земля должна быть просеяна, хорошо пропускать воздух и влагу, не уплотняться. В качественной земле семена хорошо прорастают, всходы развиваются без проблем.
Для посева цветов используются небольшие рассадные ёмкости или теплички, в которые насыпается земля слоем высотой 4-5 см. Семена у вербены не слишком мелкие, их распределяют по поверхности влажной почвы, выдерживая между ними расстояние 1-2 см, затем сверху присыпают тонким слоем земли не более 5 мм.
Посевы накрывают плёнкой или стеклом. До появления всходов нужно контролировать уровень влажности почвы в рассадных ящиках, не допуская даже кратковременного пересыхания земли. Температура до появления всходов цветов должна быть 24-26 градусов. Семена вербены прорастают 10 дней и более, так как заключены в плотную оболочку, часто всходы появляются не дружно.
После появления всходов посевные ёмкости перемещают в прохладное место, где температура от +18 до 22 градусов.
Уход за рассадой цветов:
Освещение для рассады цветов должно быть максимально продолжительным, поэтому при посеве в феврале для рассады цветов устанавливается дополнительная досветка, чтобы продолжительность освещения в сутки была 12-14 часов.
Когда вербена в посевных ящиках подрастёт и достигнет высоты 3 см, растения нужно пикировать в рассадные стаканчики объёмом 200 мл или рассадные ящики с землёй слоем 6-7 см, размещая растения на расстоянии 5 см в ряду.
Для стимуляции ветвления кустиков вербену прищипывают, когда главный побег достигнет высоты 7-10 см.
Подкормка рассады цветов проводится 3 раза. Первый раз растения удобряют в возрасте 2-3 недель. Второй раз удобрения в растворённые в воде вносят после пикировки через 10-14 дней. Третий раз подкормку рассады цветов повторяют через 2-3 недели. В качестве удобрения для рассады цветов используются комплексные составы с содержанием азота, фосфора и калия в равных пропорциях.
Высадку рассады вербены проводят с середины мая или в начале июня, когда минует угроза заморозков. Небольшое похолодание до 0 градусов закалённая рассада вербены может выдержать, но если растения ослаблены после пересадки, ещё не укоренились, то заморозок может их погубить. Рассада вербены в возрасте трёх месяцев представляет собой пышные разветвлённые кустики, со сформировавшимися соцветиями на концах побегов и первыми раскрытыми цветками.
Уход за вербеной в открытом грунте проводится по мере необходимости. Пока кустики вербены не сомкнулись, цветам на клумбе может потребоваться прополка. Поливать вербену нужно только в засушливую и жаркую погоду, переувлажнения и застоя влаги в почве растения не любят. Вербене для пышного яркого цветения нужно открытое солнечное место. Подкормку цветов проводят раз в месяц, используя комплексное минеральное удобрение. Нельзя удобрять вербену свежим органическим удобрением, особенно настоем свежего коровяка.
