Иногда ее из-за наличия на однолетних побегах смолистых железок-бородавочек называют также бородавчатой. Это дерево высотой до 20 м с округлой кроной и тонкими пониклыми побегами. В природе встречается часто и образует светлые березовые рощи. Одно из самых светолюбивых деревьев. Растет быстро, но плохо переносит пересадку. При необходимости пересаживают ранней весной, до распускания почек.
