Хвойный опад, или хвойную подстилку — иглы сосны и ели, очень ценят и часто применяют для мульчирования. Весной, после внесения удобрений и когда почва немного подсохнет, но перед цветением земляники, все междурядья и поверхность почвы между кустами в ряду закрывают иголками хвойных растений (слой 4-5 см).

Сорняки через хвоинки не прорастают, при дождях почва не уплотняется, отпадает необходимость в частых поливах и рыхлениях. Некоторые садоводы даже утверждают, что улучшается вкус ягод. Осенью почву под кустами и в междурядьях дополнительно мульчируют торфяной крошкой, перегноем или полуперепревшим навозом слоем около 5 см.
