Если почва тяжелая и с трудом поддается механической обработке, перед вспашкой целесообразно выполнить лущение — разрыхление верхнего слоя почвы специальным плугом-лущильником, который устанавливается на механическом или ручном культиваторе. Данный метод улучшения грунта позволяет в значительной степени облегчить процесс вспашки, сделать его более качественным. Следующим этапом является рыхление (чаще всего эта процедура проводится на глинистых почвах и суглинках). В процессе обработки полностью уничтожается запекшаяся на поверхности земли плотная корка, затрудняющая вспашку и нарушающая влаго- и газообмен в глубоких слоях грунта. Для рыхления применяют бороны различной конфигурации.

На огородах небольшой площади для вспашки и вскапывания можно использовать обыкновенные лопаты с остро заточенным краем. После грубой обработки почвы крупные комья следует обязательно разбить боронами и затем разровнять поверхность.

Рыхление почвы необходимо производить и после посадки растений, чтобы не допустить образования плотной корки на поверхности грунта. Чтобы не повредить нежную корневую систему и стебли огородных культур, для данной процедуры используют маленькие бороны с удобной ручкой и заостренными зубьями.
