Жизнеспособность семян
Жизнеспособность — это количество живых семян, всхожих и находящихся в стадии покоя. Ее определяют при окрашивании в растворе метиленовой сини — мертвые семена окрашиваются, а живые нет. По числу неокрашенных семян и определяют жизнеспособность.

Жизнеспособность семян огурца в первую очередь зависит от возраста семенных плодов. Наиболее высокой всхожести они достигают ко времени биологической спелости плода. Если семена не успели вызреть на корню, применяют их послеуборочное дозаривание или предпосадочное прогревание.

Хорошо вызревшие семена огурца обладают высокой жизнеспособностью, сохраняя всхожесть 7-8 лет и больше. Увеличивают срок хранения семян низкое содержание в них влаги, температура около 0°С, относительная влажность воздуха 60% при доступе кислорода.

С 5-7 лег хранения жизнеспособность семян огурца сильно снижается, а растеши из семян, хранившихся 2-3 года, по силе роста и продуктивности не отстают от тех, что выращены из свежих семян. К тому же за это время падает жизнеспособность вирусов, накопившихся в семенах.
