Именно поэтому прополка в течение весенне-летнего сезона является одной из самых трудоемких, но вместе с тем и необходимых процедур ухода за приусадебным участком, поскольку бесконтрольно развивающиеся сорные травы будут распространяться дальше и могут окончательно погубить посевы.

У сорняков есть множество неоспоримых преимуществ перед культурными растениями. «Уличные» травы прекрасно переносят неблагоприятные условия окружающей среды, обладают повышенной устойчивостью к заморозкам, засухе и переувлажнению, легко восстанавливаются после механических повреждений. Именно поэтому сорняки очень быстро распространяются по всей территории огорода, в то время как культивируемые овощи и пряные травы еще только начинают адаптироваться к открытому грунту. Даже осенью после сбора урожая и сжигания отмерших растений сорняки не исчезают: в почве остаются длинные корневища пырея, а легкие мелкие семена прекрасно зимуют под снегом, чтобы весной дать обильные всходы. При этом радикальное применение гербицидов на приусадебных участках нежелательно, поскольку вместе с сорными травами можно случайно уничтожить и культурные посадки.

Вовремя не уничтоженные сорняки наносят выращиваемым овощам огромный урон. Согласно результатам многочисленных исследований, проведенных агрономами и ботаниками, сорные травы способны поглощать более 50% комплексных подкормок, вносимых в грунт, соответственно, культурные растения постоянно испытывают дефицит питания. Учитывая приведенные выше сведения, можно сделать вывод о том, что без грамотно проводимой борьбы с сорняками обойтись невозможно, иначе осенью не будет хорошего урожая овощей. Основной проблемой в данном случае является уникальная плодовитость преобладающего большинства сорных трав. В отличие от многих культурных растений они способны развиваться не только из семян, но и из кусочков корневищ и различных частей вегетативного побега. Иногда через несколько дней после тщательно проведенной прополки на грядках уже можно заметить молодые всходы «незваных гостей». На сильно засоренных участках избавление от сорных трав может затянуться на несколько вегетативных сезонов. Даже после полного устранения корневищ и частей побегов сорняков семена дикорастущих видов все равно будут заноситься на огород ветром и водой.

Самым популярным и распространенным способом борьбы с сорняками является прополка — механическое удаление трав вместе с корневой системой. При этом следует соблюдать определенную осторожность: не встряхивать растения, чтобы не допустить высыпания в почву семян, а также стараться полностью удалять из грунта длинные корневища, иначе из оставшихся кусочков вскоре вырастут новые «соседи». Для предотвращения повторного появления сорняков на свободных территориях можно провести соляризацию: вскопанные, увлажненные и полностью подготовленные к посеву грядки следует укрыть прозрачным полиэтиленом, присыпав его края почвой или придавив небольшими камнями.
