Почему осенью желтеют и опадают листья?
Листья часто называют легкими растений. С помощью листьев растения дышат, испаряют влагу и осуществляют фотосинтез. В начале осени в листьях замедляются процессы фотосинтеза и испарения влаги. Во время первых осенних заморозков под действием низких температур в них разрушается зеленый пигмент хлорофилл, ответственный за фотосинтез.

При этом становятся заметными другие пигменты, окрашивающие листья в желтые, бурые и красные цвета. Листья стареют и становятся балластом для растений, в которых уже накопились минеральные вещества и продукты обмена. Поэтому сбрасывание листьев имеет для растения оздоровительное значение — это подготовка к зиме.

В результате значительно уменьшается испарение влаги растением осенью и особенно зимой, когда корни хуже всасывают воду. Опавшие листья предохраняют растения от вымерзания, служат естественной мульчей.
