Дерновая земля требуется садоводам в большом объеме, так как входит в большинство смесей, благодаря наличию перегнивших не только растительных, но и животных остатков содержит много питательных веществ, хорошо удерживает влагу, рыхлая, предохраняет от застаивания излишней воды. Приготавливают ее из дерна злаковых лугов.

Лучше всего подходит дери со старых пастбищ, где корневая система трав сильно разрастается. Важно и то, на каких почвах расположены луга или пастбища, с которых заготавливают дерн. Лучшая дерновая земля получается с лугов или пастбищ, расположенных на глинистых почвах.

Заготавливают дерн в июне. Его нарезают пластами толщиной 8-10 и шириной 20-25 см, после чего складывают травой вниз в кучи высотой 1,5-2 м. Для ускорения разложения и получения более питательной земли дерн рекомендуется переслаивать навозом или навозной жижей. В течение лета кучу 1-2 раза перелопачивают, к весне дернина злаков разлагается и земля становится пригодной для употребления.
