Сорняки через хвоинки не прорастают, при дождях почва не уплотняется, отпадает необходимость в частых поливах и рыхлениях. Некоторые садоводы даже утверждают, что улучшается вкус ягод. Осенью почву под кустами и в междурядьях дополнительно мульчируют торфяной крошкой, перегноем или полуперепревшим навозом слоем около 5 см.
