Многолетнее кустовое травянистое растение высотой до 40-45 см. Листья продолговато-яйцевидные. Цветки довольно крупные, диаметром до 4,5 см, собраны в длинные кистевидные соцветия. Цветет в июне в течение 25-30 дней.
Вид зимостоек, неприхотлив. Предпочитает открытые солнечные места, хотя может расти и в полутени. Не переносит застоя воды. К почвам нетребователен, но любит влажные с примесью песка. Культура отзывчива на 2-3-кратное внесение минерального удобрения. Укрытия на зиму не требует. На одном месте растения выращивают 5-6 лет.
Размножают семенами, черенками и делением куста. Семена сохраняют всхожесть 3-4 года. Их сеют в апреле-июле в открытый грунт рядами. Оптимальная температура для прорастания +18° С. Всходы появляются через 18-24 дня. После образования первого настоящего листа сеянцы пикируют. На постоянное место высаживают весной следующего года, и через 2-3 месяца лихнис зацветает.
Осенью или весной лихнис выкапывают, делят на несколько частей и высаживают на расстоянии 25 см друг от друга. На черенки в начале лета режут отросшие молодые побеги и укореняют их по обычной методике. На постоянное место укорененные черенки высаживают в конце августа — начале сентября.
Сделать это несложно. Семена высевают в открытый грунт в мае-июне на солнечных, защищенных от ветра местах, заделывая на глубину 1-1,5 см. При появлении первой пары настоящих листьев всходы прореживают.
В первый год жизни лунник образует укороченный стебель и розетку прикорневых листьев. Чтобы растение перезимовало, его укрывают листьями. Весной следующего года лунник рано трогается в рост, и стебель достигает в высоту 1 м.
В мае куст покрывается фиолетово-красными (иногда белыми) цветками, собранными в простую метелку — по 10-15 цветков на каждом стебле. В июне растение отцветает, и на нем появляются круглые, плоские стручки диаметром 4-5 см. В августе-сентябре листья начинают желтеть, и созревшие семена высыпаются, обнажая промежуточные серебристо-перламутровые пленки.
