Под слоем мульчи во влажной теплой среде кишат различные почвенные организмы. Для них мульча служит питанием. Под их воздействием она постепенно разлагается, обогащая почву гумусом. Растения тоже извлекают выгоду, ведь мульча сохраняет в почве влагу и подавляет рост сорняков. Для того, чтобы она выполнила свое предназначение, ее слой должен иметь толщину по меньшей мере 5-8 см. Тогда создаются прекрасные условия для питания и размножения дождевых червей. Тогда после дождя не образуется корка.

Грубая мульча бывает нужна для укрытия посаженных осенью луковичных растений. Стружки и опилки содержат много дубильных веществ, поэтому их сначала компостируют и применяют только в хорошо перепревшем состоянии. А картоном хорошо выстилать дорожки, он задерживает рост сорняков.

Мульча из свежих растений одновременно служит подкормкой. Прекрасный материал дает люцерна. Если ее равномерно разбросать и слегка заделать в почву, она улучшит структуру и повысит содержание азота. Люцерну ведь и самим можно выращивать — на газоне, перед участком, на специально отведенной грядке. Хорошо бы удобрить почву под нее фосфором и калием. Это многолетнее растение на одном месте можно выращивать три-пять лет. Когда начнет вырождаться, посейте ее где-нибудь еще. Совсем неплохо использовать в качестве мульчи окопник.

Его зеленая масса богата азотом и калием, но в ней мало тех труднорастворимых органических веществ, которые служат источником почвенного гумуса. Баланс минеральных веществ в окопнике идеален для удобрения картофеля. Эту траву скашивают при высоте 45 см, она дает за лето четыре- пять укосов. Хороший результат дает крапива.

Она содержит в себе много полезных веществ и поэтому оказывает благотворное влияние на рост овощных растений. А, кроме того, она отпугивает слизней и улиток.
