По этой причине частые, но необильные поливы не приносят растениям никакой пользы, наоборот, даже могут оказать отрицательное воздействие: корни перестают расти вглубь, где больше воды и питательных веществ, а располагаются ближе к поверхности. Определить, какова влажность почвы, не так уж сложно. Выкопайте лунку глубиной 20-30 см и загляните в нее. Если нижний слой сухой или слабовлажный — значит, надо поливать. Внешний вид растений тоже способен подсказать, надо поливать или нет.
Хотя в сильно жаркую погоду они могут «опустить уши» только потому, что идет чересчур интенсивное испарение, корни просто не успевают подавать влагу. В таких случаях ваши грядки обрадовались бы вечернему душу. Каждый огородник знает, что требовательность к воде у разных культур разная. К бесспорно влаголюбивым относятся огурцы, салат, шпинат, капуста, редис. Их корневая система развита слабо, находится в верхних слоях почвы, а испаряющая поверхность листьев велика. У корнеплодов корни посолиднее, но в период формирования урожая влаги требуется побольше, иначе корнеплоды получаются грубыми, деревянистыми.
Переизбыток тоже ничего хорошего не сулит: они могут загнить, растрескаться, деформироваться. Луку нужно немного воды, но трижды за период вегетации он требует, чтобы почва была достаточно влажной — в первые недели после посадки, в период отрастания перьев и во время образования луковиц. Более поздние поливы только вредят — задерживают созревание, ухудшают лежкоспособность.
Тыква, арбуз, дыня, фасоль, кукуруза, помидоры, морковь умеют добывать себе воду из глубины, причем расходуют ее весьма экономно. Поливать надо столько, сколько воды может удержать почва, а не вместить за один раз. Вот эти понятия огородники часто путают. Полив всегда надо сопровождать рыхлением — до и после. Важно после полива замульчировать поверхность, если не травой, то хотя бы засыпать сухой землей. Если видите, что тучи собираются пролиться дождем, не поленитесь и подрыхлите огород, пусть и не очень тщательно — так вы задержите больше влаги.

Конечно, легче всего поливать из шланга, не приходится таскать воду ведрами, переливать ее в лейку, но в этом случае велика бывает опасность повредить растения, размыть почву, обнажить корни. Тогда уж лучше сделать так, чтобы вода текла по междурядьям. Помнится, один из читателей нашей газеты делился своим опытом. Берется пустая бутылка, втыкается горлышком в землю на глубину 10 см, чтобы подготовить гнездо.
Затем уже с водой вставляется туда. Бутылку можно немного приподнять, встряхнуть, чтобы не мешала земляная пробка. И вот потом вода будет медленно просачиваться в почву в течение, может быть, целой недели. Конечно, на грядку требуется не одна бутылка. Пластиковые бутылки можно и не переворачивать. Достаточно их напрокалывать шилом в средней части (нижнюю высотой 7-8 см оставляют целой). В почву закапывают не полностью, а примерно на две трети. И сорняки меньше растут, и температура почвы не колеблется сильно. Лучшая вода для полива — дождевая. Худшая — холодная. Иногда в емкости с водой кладут старые гвозди — таким образом она обогащается железом. При поливе огорода из шланга в углы грядок вкапывают пустые бутылки горлышками вниз. Зачем?
