К растениям для ковровых цветников относятся низкорослые (5-10 см, изредка 10-25 см) растения с разнообразно окрашенными декоративными листьями (алиссум, арабис, обриеция, цинерария и т.д.). Из них создают ковровые цветники со сложными орнаментами, но эффектны такие цветники только при тщательном уходе.

Большая часть низкорослых растений нуждается в легкой почве и дренаже. Предварительное глубокое перекапывание почвы с уничтожением корневищных сорняков обязательно, иначе в дальнейшем потребуются частые прополки, поскольку среди невысоких ковровых растений сорняки сразу бросаются в глаза.
