Осенью проводят глубокое перекапывание будущих грядок с одновременным внесением перепревшего навоза, листового перегноя и комплексных минеральных смесей.

Перед высадкой в открытый грунт проводят осмотр и сортировку подготовленного посадочного материала. Луковицы аккуратно разделяют на «детки» и острым инструментом удаляют шейки. Данная процедура позволяет получить первые всходы уже через несколько дней.

После обработки «детки» погружают в воду температурой около 30° С выше нуля и выдерживают в течение 20—24 часов. Будущие растения высаживают в разрыхленную и увлаженную почву на глубину не более 5 см, оставляя расстояние между рядами 20—25 см.

Если планируется выращивать лук-шалот для получения зеленого пера, культуру высаживают в конце октября, не дожидаясь длительных заморозков. Луковицы помещают в субстрат почти вплотную друг к другу. Сверху гряды присыпают верховым торфом или мульчей.
