Бадан, или бергения (Bergenia) – вечно зеленое многолетнее растение из семейства камнеломковых. Ранней весной, как только сходит снег и начинает пригревать солнышко, среди больших кожистых листьев бадана появляются соцветия. Цветоносы растут и цветут одновременно, при появлении цветоноса на нем почти сразу раскрываются первые колокольчики, чем выше он становится, тем больше ярусов колокольчиков появляется, цветонос может достигать высоты от 20 до 60 см. Цветы могут быть белыми, розовыми, алыми, пурпурными или темно-лиловыми в зависимости от сорта бадана. Цветение также в зависимости от сорта длится около двух месяцев, есть ремонтантные сорта бадана, которые цветут несколько раз. После цветения бадан образует плоды- коробочки с семенами.

Самые первые баданы зацветают в середине апреля. Декоративность бадану добавляют большие, кожистые листья.  Роскошный цветущий куст бадана, обрамленный ярко-зелеными крупными листьями в начале весны, оживит любой уголок сада. Так как бадан в дикой природе часто растет на скалистых горах и обладает мощным надземным корневищем, расположенным в верхнем слое почвы, он отлично будет чувствовать на садовой альпийской горке.  Летом после цветения бадан будет отличным фоном для других цветущих растений, а осенью его листья, накапливая на зиму питательные вещества, начнут менять окрас на красноватый или появится пурпурная кайма по краю листа.

Размножение бадана.

Сажать бадан лучше в полутени, так как корни, выступающие на поверхности почвы, нуждаются в защите от жары. Почвы благоприятны рыхлые и влажные, но длительный застой воды бадан не выносит. На одном месте растет более 10 лет, плохо сказываются на росте бадана также частые пересадки. Бадан хорошо смотрится и соседствует в тенистых цветниках, рядом с ирисами, декоративной осокой или хостой.

Чаще всего бадан размножают делением куста, черенкованием розеток или посевом семян. Семена бадана высевают в марте в ящики, затем пикируют и в конце июня высаживают на постоянное место. На зиму молодые сеянцы укрывают опавшей листвой.  Зацветут молодые баданы через два года.

Черенками рассаживают бадан с мая по август. Отделите розетку у отцветшего бадана и слегка заглубите в землю на 1-2 см. Деленками размножают бадан в начале сентября, отделив от куста надземное корневище длиной 15-20см с тремя почками, отсадите, слегка заглубив для лучшего укоренения. На зиму необходимо укрыть растения, чтобы избежать вымерзания.

Уход за баданом довольно прост.  Весной чтобы он быстрее пошел в рост, бадан проливают теплой водой. Подкармливают бадан через две недели после цветения комплексным минеральным удобрением – 1 ст. ложка на 10 литров воды на 2 кв.м.

У баданов постепенно отмирают листья, которые удаляют после того как они сами отделятся, так бадан спасает свои корневища от перегрева, если старые листья удалять сразу то почву следует мульчировать и постоянно поливать.

Некоторые сорта бадана могут подмерзать, поэтому на зиму их следует укрывать хотя бы опавшими листьями, а рано весной, как только сойдет снег, листья убирают.
