Лучше всего для этой цели подойдет пахизандра верхушечная — длиннокорневищный полукустарник с недревеснеющими побегами, образующий густые заросли из полегающих стеблей высотой 30-35 см с гремя ярусами листьев. Листья яйцевидные, плотные, темно-зеленые, с неровными краями.
Каждый ярус листьев — это годичный побег. Листья зимующие, живут в течение 3 лет, чем и обеспечивается плотность покрова из пахизандры. Цветки малозаметные, зеленоватые. В условиях средней полосы семена не образует. Существует форма variegata с белыми полосками по краям листьев.
Хорошо растет в тени, при посадке на открытых солнечных местах теряет изумрудно-зеленую окраску листвы и страдает от яркого весеннего солнца. К почвам растение нетребовательно.
В засушливый период желателен полив. В подкормках и прополках не нуждается, зимует без укрытия. В первые годы, до разрастания, рекомендуется профилактическое укрывание лапником. Размножают пахизандру отрезками корневищ, лучшее время посадки — ранняя весна. Отрезки корневищ с почкой возобновления укладывают в канавки на глубину 3-4 см и присыпают рыхлой почвой. Размножают также предварительно укорененными стеблевыми черенками. При выращивании из семян необходима стратификация в течение 2-3 месяцев.
