Картофельная диета назначается при различных хронических заболеваниях — артритах, артрозах, анемии, язве желудка, гастрите, нарушениях функционирования сердечно-сосудистой системы, экземе. Вармс — раннеспелая разновидность, образующая белые округлые или слегка удлиненные клубни, не рассыпающиеся при термической обработке.
Вятка — урожайный раннеспелый сорт с очень крупными белыми клубнями и почти незаметными почками-глазками. Мякоть плотная, сочная, не темнеющая после разрезания. Картофель обладает устойчивостью к распространенным болезням растений — фитофторе, парше, вирусным заболеваниям. Своевременно собранный урожай неплохо хранится в течение 3—4 месяцев.

Среднеранние сорта картофеля также культивируют преимущественно для повседневного употребления или для недолгого хранения в холодных помещениях. В средней полосе России наиболее распространены Арина, Волжанин, Дружный, Кондор, Романо, Смена, Сантэ, Эстима.
Арина — урожайный неприхотливый сорт среднеранней спелости. Клубни овальных очертаний, слегка удлиненные, очень крупные, с белой сочной мякотью и почти незаметными почками-глазками. Мякоть не темнеет на срезе и почти не рассыпается в процессе термической обработки.
Волжанин — среднеранний сорт, при должном уходе дающий хороший урожай. Клубни овальные, очень крупные, белого цвета. Данная разновидность картофеля имеет отличные вкусовые качества, но подвержена заражению различными инфекционными заболеваниями, особенно паршой.
Дружный — высококрахмалистый среднеранний сорт с высокой урожайностью. Клубни белые, овальные или почти сферические. Поврежденная мякоть быстро темнеет на открытом воздухе.
Кондор — среднеранняя разновидность с очень вкусными крупными клубнями оригинального красного оттенка. Форма подземных утолщений удлиненная, мякоть желтоватая. Данный сорт картофеля обладает повышенной устойчивостью к большинству распространенных вирусных заболеваний огородных посадок.

Эстима — среднеранний сорт картофеля с крупными желтыми клубнями овальных очертаний. Мякоть светлозолотистая, глазки малочисленные, небольшие. Обладает устойчивостью к патогенным вирусам. Лучше всего растет и развивается на легких песчаных грунтах.
Из среднеспелых сортов наибольшей урожайностью в сочетании с неприхотливостью обладают Адретта и Гатчинский.

Берлихинген — популярный среднепоздний сорт, при должном уходе дающий обильный урожай. Кожура некрупных клубней ярко-красного оттенка, шелушащаяся, мякоть интенсивно-белая. Данная разновидность картофеля редко заражается инфекционными заболеваниями, своевременно собранный урожай долго хранится.
Лорх — распространенный среднепоздний сорт, обладающий высокой урожайностью. Клубни овальные или круглые, с белой кожурой, мякоть зеленоватая, крахмалистая, очень вкусная. Глазки неглубокие, малочисленные. Данная разновидность обладает повышенной устойчивостью к распространенным заболеваниям представителей семейства пасленовых. Созревшие клубни хорошо хранятся.
Позднеспелые сорта в средней полосе России почти не распространены, поскольку подобные разновидности имеют удлиненный период вегетации и в условиях ранних заморозков практически не вызревают.
Картофель рекомендуется сажать на легких суглинках и супесчаных грунтах с рыхлой механической структурой, хорошей аэрацией и достаточной дренированностью. В глинистые почвы перед погружением посадочного материала следует внести натуральные разрыхлители — верховой торф, перепревший навоз, опилки, речной песок, мульчу. Корневая система у пасленовых культур слабая и незначительно заглубленная, поэтому перекапывание и обработку субстрата проводят на глубину не более 35 см. Для улучшения роста растений и повышения урожайности рекомендуется формирование так называемых гребней — валов земли высотой около 30 см, между которыми следует оставить 65—70 см. Субстрат, сформированный в виде возвышенностей, быстро прогревается лучами весеннего солнца, и картофель можно высадить в такую почву на неделю раньше. Растения, культивируемые на постоянно подновляемых гребнях, быстро развиваются, дают ранний полноценный урожай. Перед высадкой клубней землю, образующую гребни, следует разбороновать по «склонам».
Все органические подкормки рекомендуется использовать осенью, чтобы не допустить накапливания нитратов в растущих клубнях. Наилучшим вариантом удобрения является перепревший навоз, смешанный с золой и гуано. Можно вообще отказаться от органики, заменив ее комплексными минеральными смесями. Необходимо помнить о том, что картофель обладает повышенной чувствительностью к хлорным соединениям, поэтому вместо хлористого калия обычно берут сульфаты или калимагнезию.
Перед помещением на постоянное место произрастания посадочный материал следует должным образом подготовить. Первой необходимой процедурой является перебирание — тщательный осмотр клубней и отбраковка подгнивших, больных и деформированных экземпляров. Небрежное отношение к растениям приведет к снижению урожайности. Затем выполняют калибровку — деление клубней на группы по размеру (крупные, средние и мелкие).
Большие клубни аккуратно разрезают на куски острым ножом, продезинфицированным лизолом или спиртом. Свежие повреждения мякоти аккуратно присыпают порошком из золы или серы.
Для проращивания подготовленного картофеля в целях получения сверхраннего урожая используют рассадные ящики, наполненные опилками. В стенках и дне просверливают 12—15 отверстий для вентилирования, затем помещают клубни в опилки и выдерживают в теплом, хорошо освещенном месте не менее 3 недель. После появления зеленых ростков посадочный материал извлекают и раскладывают ровным слоем на чистой хлопчатобумажной ткани или речном песке. Данную процедуру называют провяливанием. Через 5—8 дней можно высаживать провяленные клубни в открытый грунт.
Чтобы предотвратить избыточный рост верхушечных побегов, картофель перед посадкой на гряды или гребни опрыскивают слабым раствором обыкновенной питьевой соды.
Если для культивирования выбраны сорта, обладающие слабым иммунитетом к распространенным инфекционным заболеваниям, целесообразно провести предварительную обработку посадочного материала протравкой — раствором комплексного фунгицида — и бактерицидными препаратами (удобнее всего использовать растворимые составы «Цинеб» и «ТМТД»).
Высаживание клубней и их частей начинают после прогревания верхнего слоя субстрата до 7—8° С выше нуля.
Мелкие клубни укладывают в лунки по 2—3 штуки, средние и крупные — из расчета 4—5 штук на 1 м2 площади огорода.
Урожайность картофеля заметно снижается при слишком высокой температуре воздуха и почвы, чрезмерной загущенности посадок, переувлажнении и засухе.
Перегревание верхнего слоя грунта приводит к прекращению развития молодых клубней. Для улучшения аэрации корневой системы необходимо производить рыхление верхнего слоя субстрата через некоторое время после полива.
Во время летней засухи выполняют регулярное окучивание, чтобы предотвратить распространение сорных трав по огороду и ускорить процесс созревания клубней. Полив должен быть обильным, но не слишком частым. В качестве защиты от перегрева рекомендуется выполнять побелку взрослых кустов мелом. При угрозе заморозков молодые всходы прикапывают рыхлой землей или посыпают мульчей.
Сбор урожая созревших клубней начинают после выраженного подсыхания надземной части побега. Извлеченный из грунта картофель оставляют на грядке до вечера, прикрыв непрозрачной пленкой или мешковиной для защиты от яркого солнца.
