Шефердия
Семейство Лоховые.

Это растение в Украине и России появилось относительно недавно, зато довольно широко культивируется в Канаде, там же она широко распространена как дико- рос, в дикой природе растет обычно на каменистых склонах. У нас шефердия встречается только в культуре, а центром ее изучения и разведения Стал Киев.

Биологические особенности
Шефердия — дерево в среднем до 7 м высотой, с развитой корневой системой, широкой кроной (до 15 м в диаметре) и распростертыми, как бы стелющимися ветвями с колючками; может быть одно- и многоствольным.

Побеги и листья покрыты серебристым опушением, сами листья удлиненно-ланцетовидные. Цветет в апреле—мае (в зависимости от климатической зоны) до появления листьев, средняя длительность цветения —6 -10 дней; цветки мелкие, желтые, сидячие, собраны в колосовидные соцветия.

Шефердия — двудомное растение с мужскими и женскими особями, которые имеют отличия: женские растения зацветают на несколько дней раньше мужских, и листья у них появляются уже в конце цветения. Плоды образовываются только на женских растениях, они мелкие, шарлахово-красные, кисло-сладкого вкуса.

Шефердия опыляется насекомыми. Она нетребовательна к почве, довольно зимостойка (может расти и плодоносить в Московской и Ленинградской областях), засухоустойчива, светолюбива и почти не требует ухода.

Ценность культуры
Плоды шефердии можно употреблять в пищу как в свежем виде, так и в переработанном, по вкусу они близки к барбарису и красной смородине и содержат большое количество каротиноидов, витамина С (его в шефердии даже больше, чем в облепихе и смородине), дубильные и желирующие вещества, лейкоантоцианы и катехины.

Канадские индейцы издавна ценили шефердию не только как плодовое, но и как лекарственное растение, ее плоды полезны при многих сердечнососудистых заболеваниях и обладают способностью укреплять капилляры.

Подобно бобовым растениям шефердия способна обогащать почву азотом, а строение корневой системы позволяет использовать ее для укрепления склонов. Также она интересна своей декоративностью, из нее можно создавать колючие живые изгороди.

Как таковые отсутствуют.

Выбор места
Шефердия очень светолюбива, на участке надо выделять под нее наиболее освещенные места, других ограничений и пожеланий нет.

Размножение
Шефердию можно размножать семенами (весной и осенью), черенками и корневыми отпрысками. В случае с семенным разведением семена надо стратифицировать при температуре 0—3 °С в течение 60 дней.

Размеры посадочной ямы и схема посадки
Между деревьями должно оставаться расстояние 5—6 м, диаметр посадочной ямы — 60—100 см, глубина — 60 см.

Обрезка, формирование формы
Четкие схемы не разработаны.

Поливы
Достаточно поливать шефердию только при длительном отсутствии дождей.

Прочий уход
Уход включает в себя подкормки (раз в год весной) и профилактические меры по борьбе с вредителями и болезнями.

Уборка урожая
Плоды шефердии обретают зрелую окраску задолго до созревания, поэтому о готовности их к сбору сигнализирует изменение плотности. Можно собирать их кистью.
