Данное растение культивируется на Руси с XII столетия. В сочных крупных корнеплодах содержится много сахаристых веществ, белков, витаминов, полезных для человека ароматных эфирных масел и природных антисептиков. Кроме того, в соке редьки обнаружены растворимые соединения магния, серы, калия и кальция. Во время засухи увлажнение должно быть обильным, иначе корнеплоды станут суховатыми и очень горькими, их кожура покроется глубокими трещинами.

Раннеспелые сорта редьки можно убирать в конце июля, учитывая степень созревания корнеплодов. Заготовленный урожай хранят в песке, используя для этой цели холодный погреб или подвал.
